No Man’s Sky | Corvette Expedition

Corvette expeidtions.jpg

With the recent release of Corvettes, it was not unexpected that an expedition surrounding them would soon come out. It’s been a while since I've partaken in a full expedition, as they last up to five weeks. I usually jump in on the shorter ones towards the end of the year and catch up.

It was great to see this expedition mostly focused on the new ship. While these things tend to have their expected got to do it every expedition type of deals. This one really highlights all the things you can do on and around the ships.

This was also one of those expeditions where you could get a lot done out of order. So, reading through the expedition phase ahead of time is quite worth it. As some of the things take a while, like growing and picking plants on your ship. While other stuff like doing a spacewalk, free-falling for 60 secs, taking a screenshot of the ship. Along with so many others. These are things you can do almost everywhere.

My experience with expeditions in the past has been mostly bug-free. This time around, you can tell they are still working on all the aspects of the game that the new ship type influences. As animals were glitching into my ship. There were some issues with landing in certain areas. I can see why they waited a little while before releasing the expedition for this. Even then, it still feels like it needs some work.

Like usual, after reading through the expedition milestones. It was time to head off to the starting ship. This time, however, things would be quite different. As you're starting a ship, and any standard ship in this expedition will not accept you as the pilot.

This time around, the game has you craft an uplink that sends you off to a station in space. This requires chromatic metal, which can be made from mining copper. I ended up finding some rocks on the planet that I could mine for the stuff instead.

I did end up going around the planet gathering some other basic materials. While I was not quite sure what I'd need in this adventure. There is always the standard stuff you need, like oxygen, carbon, and so forth. After getting a decent fill of the stuff, I teleported up to the station.

From there, the expedition has you create quite a simple ship. As you progress along, many of the milestones reward you with Corvette parts. Many of these parts are then needed for further milestones like adding cargo space, defense, and other types of modules to your ship.

the spacewalk.jpg

With the ship built, I went out for a bit of a ride around the system and to go farming on another planet. While doing so. I thought I'd stop and take a moment to try and finish off some of the easy expedition milestones involving the ship itself. It still has not gotten old being able to do a spacewalk outside of your ship.

Along with things like farming some asteroids for materials, using the autopilot, and so on. This was perhaps quite a long trip to another planet in the starting solar system. I’m usually rather quick after getting a jump drive, fueling up, and running so I can make that fateful first hyperspace jump.

The planet I ended up on, I went to for the salvage containers to do another milestone and get some further Corvette parts. The planets in this expedition were teaming with hostile sentinels and quite a few animals as well.

Before I knew it, I was back in space and jumping to the next system. As far as expeditions go, I'm used to doing the shorter ones lasting only two weeks or so. I found the amount of system jumping to get to the next major milestone to be a bit much. So many things could be done on the ship or around it. It really felt like I was just skipping over a dozen or so systems at a time.

While at first I did do my usual. Stopping in every system at the space station. So, I can pick up the teleportation location. Along with buying a space suit, an inventory slot is required. I did feel I was running out of ship and inventory space towards the end of the expedition. I’m kind of glad I stopped doing this after the first ten or so systems. While having lots of space is always nice. There was a lot of dead space in this expedition.

After a bit of a side trip, picking up some locations and inventory slots. I arrived at my first major point, called rendezvous locations. I was kind of shocked that this one was inside a space station. Usually, you spend lots of time trying to find the exact location on a planet in a system. That alone made me feel like this expedition was going to be on the quicker side, and it somewhat was outside of all the system jumping.

I then went and used the new ship's parts to expand my ship a bit. This included adding two living walls to my ship. Since I knew growing plants was going to take some time. I just lacked the materials needed to make any seeds. So that was my next major goal to go after.

I ended up going for Mordite Roots. Since I could hunt wildlife on planets to get the materials needed to start those. The other types of seeds I had options to use felt like getting them would be more of an effort.

helping the ship.jpg

During this entire expedition, I must have had six or seven space freighter recues pop up after I jumped into a new system. I was hoping that after claiming a freighter, they would not show up at such a regulator involvement. I was, however, quite wrong in that way of thinking.

My first two attempts at claiming a freighter did not go well. I defeated the pirates. I was invited aboard to take over the ship. I went to land in the new spot they have for bigger ships. I opened my hatch to my Corvette, and from there I could not find any spot I could enter the freighter. I even glitched out into walls while trying to enter the hangar bay.

I’d later discover on the back of my ship. There are two buttons. One opens the hatch. The other would allow me to teleport on board the freighter. I just assumed both buttons did the same thing. After being a bit frustrated and wondering if there was a different way to go about things. It turns out there was! Still, I think you should be able to spacewalk to an opening on the freighter and enter that way.

Final Thoughts

I also found it a bit funny that one of the milestones I needed to go fishing for was. At first, I felt that it was just a copy-and-paste thing to do from other expeditions. Then it made a little sense, as you can do cooking on board the Corvette.

Overall, all the things this expedition has you do, they were able to tie in quite well into some kind of use case of the new ship itself. It's been quite a lot of fun to fly with. I also now have quite a few more Corvette parts than before, after working on this expedition a bit.
