Taking A Look Smells Like A Mushroom

Taking A Look Smells Like a Mushroom.jpg

With a game name like that, I'm expecting greatness. Once I found out one of the characters is called Carrotado I could not stop laughing. From shooting at mushrooms, jumping puzzles, and some intense boss fights it was a smelly good time.

Who would have thought the human race would die off and what would remain would be vegetables. With a game that was so ridiculous from the get-go. I was not expecting Carrotado to be fueled by revenge against the diabolical magic mushrooms.

As far as tutorials go in games this one was a banger 11/10. I was blowing things up, getting shot at by magic mushroom gas, and laughing. Most importantly the early parts of the game did not feel like a tutorial for the most part. It was just pure simple fun.

While you are out blasting mushrooms on different planets running a mission they can drop scraps. These are used once you are back at your base to buy weapon upgrades, more health, or even more lives.

I ended up going right for some sniper rifle upgrades before taking on my first real mission. It was a gun I kept switching back to quite a lot and the best part is I could use it at close or long range. Making it one of my go-to guns for eliminating some evil mushrooms.

While it would have been best to increase my life and health before the first mission. As it turns out taking any damage reduces half a health or more. Once you run out of the couple of health you have you burn a carrot life and respawn at the last save checkpoint. There is no saving in the middle of a mission and reloading.

The game has quite a lot of platform-jumping elements to it. While they start you off easy, they can become quite the show of timing jumps, shooting mushrooms, and just hoping to reach the next checkpoint.

I’ve never been the biggest fan of jumping platformers but with everything else in this game that kept me wanting to see what would be next. Even more so when some corny yet funny joke would be tossed in about being on a mission for fire boots or

There are quite a few moments in this game where things just get downright crazy. Usually, it’s some epic boss battle where the entire arena is trying to kill you. There are adds spawning in everywhere, and laser beams flying at you for good measure.

This game just loves to keep the player on their toes. I found myself quite a few times just jumping around hoping to not take any damage. Thankfully the mushrooms tend to be a rather bad shot. You jump a little and they seem to miss it like it was a competition.

Granted that only helps so much since this game seems to love putting the player into ambushes with lasers shooting at you. They even sometimes bring up the fact you are about to walk into some kind of trap. As if you were not already on your toes assuming carrots even have toes to begin with. I’m sure mine would have been shot long before making it out of the first mission.

One thing I found myself doing quite a lot of switching up whatever gun I was firing. While I love the sniper rifle quite a few times I just needed to whip out some melee or a full-on blown rocket launcher shooting rockets everywhere in a burst of mushroom-killing death.

While you do get quite a few health and ammo drops. Things like ammo are something you can run out of. Anytime I went into a situation like a cowboy shooting everything left and right usually depleted my ammo reserves over time.

Thankfully at every checkpoint, there is an ammo shop. There is a bit of a catch however since it costs scraps to get further ammo. I found myself rather going without and just using the few other guns at my disposal hoping to loot enough ammo to get sniper rounds to keep me going.

While using a gun is always fun. Sometimes I found so many mushrooms attacking me that it would feel like a waste of ammo to use a gun. I’d flat out take out my melee weapon and almost like some kind of ninja go hopping from one mushroom to another cutting their tops off and leaving behind a pile of scraps to loot afterward.

This usually occurred when the game music switched up to some crazy high-energy background song. There are quite a few high-octane music pieces that just make you want to hop around like a crazed carrot out for revenge. Which thankfully are you playing.

I also can’t get over just how over-the-top ridiculous the storyline is right before each mission loads up. There is usually some crazed story and anytime this game mentions some name of a hero or villain it just cracks me up.

Final Thoughts

Overall, quite a high-energy and funny game. Sometimes the situation was a little over the top from what you had to defeat or what you were expected to do once you killed a boss. That is what makes games like these so great they don’t hold back and you find yourself just having a fun time. Unless you have missed a jump for the 5th time in a row as you were far too distracted with flying mushrooms raining down death on you!
