Old School RuneScape | Unlocking The Fairy Rings

Unlocking the fairy rings.jpg

Quite a big step in traveling around the map quicker than I have been unlocking the Fairy Rings. This is a goal I've been working on along with quite a few other things. I ended up discovering I could get it quicker than I was expecting.

I originally thought you had to finish the quest Fairytale II to unlock the rings. It turns out you only needed to get so far along in the quest to be given access to the network. You do, however, need to finish the quest if you want to have a fairy ring in your house.

While it would be nice one day to have a fairy ring in my house. Since that requires having a superior garden that takes level 65 construction to install. Along with the fact that I don’t have rooms, it is worth going to my house for. Finishing Fairytale II is not needed for a bit.

Before I could even start Fairytale, I still had one required quest left to finish. This would end up giving me access to Zanaris where the fairies are. Along with getting the staff required to use the fairy ring network in the first place.

It turns out a group of warriors looking for a lost city. The warriors were searching the woods for a leprechaun named Shamus. Who was hiding in a nearby tree that I ended up cutting down. Scaring not only him but me as well once I found him.

After talking with the leprechaun, I gathered I needed to board a boat to Entrana. The boat would however be taking me to a place where I could not bring in any gear and most items. So, I ended up running up to the bank and dropping off some items.

I also lucked out and had just a high enough level of magic to cast damage to an undead spell. Thankfully I've also been banking most runes I get as well. So, I had everything I needed to cast the spell.

It did not take long before I found myself in yet another cave. I had to chop down another tree. This time, however, that tree was protected by a level 101 spirit. Despite not having any armor on me I ended up finding a safe spot to cast my damage to undead spells from.

After that, I was able to collect wood from the tree. I ended up gathering a few branches in case I ever lost the Dramen staff I ended up crafting from the branch. As it is a requirement to enter Zanaris and to use the fairy ring system.

It was kind of strange, this is one of those kinds of quests that don’t grant experience when you finish them. Instead, it was worth a whole 3 quest points, and I got access to Zanaris. I would have thought there be a reason for a quest like this to give farming experience since that is what is needed for the next quests.

talking to an advanced gardener.jpg

Next up it was time to work on Fairytale I itself. It turns out all the crops the fairies grow in Zanaris are dying. I was tasked with asking a bunch of advanced gardeners what they thought the issue was. They all had quite a wide range of possible issues that could be causing it.

It was then time to head into Zanaris. I was supposed to be talking with the Fairy Queen herself. Turns out she had taken ill as well. It seems there was a much deeper issue than just crops not surviving in Zanaris.

After some running around the issue was finally discovered. There was a tanglefoot that was making a mess of things. It however could not be killed with normal weapons or spells. I needed to get an item enchanted and use it to kill off Tanglefoot.

I then had to go through a rather short maze to find Tanglefoot. The levels I've been gaining in combat along with some gear upgrades more than paid off. I almost did not need to eat any food to heal.

While the weapon I had was not that powerful. Taking down this over-level 100 creature was not a challenge. It was missing most of its attacks on me. So, I got to just sit there and slowly shave off bits of health for a while before defeating it.

While I prefer to finish quests when I can. I lack the skills to fully do a fairytale II cure a queen. So, I decided to go as far as my current skills would allow. That would be more than enough to unlock the fairy ring system. Which I then could use to teleport to so many places like I'd like to be. Even more so teleport back to a location near the grand exchange if I can find a fairy ring while out on my adventures.

getting the cert.jpg

I needed to head back to Zanaris and find a certificate. It had quite a few strange symbols that I could not read on it. Thankfully the temple has some spots with symbols in it to help translate it.

There was then a bunch of running around Zanaris trying to further understand what I just had acquired. It turns out the fairies have a hidden place. You can’t just enter a single address on the fairy rings to get to it.

It required entering in the correct order four different locations. With one of those locations not taking you anywhere. On my first attempt, I put one in the wrong place and teleported it to the wrong spot.

You need to rotate the combinations around till you arrive at the one you need. They do at least till you where they are taking you. Just in case you end up messing things up or just want to see what a certain address takes you to.

There is also a log system that shows where you have been in the past for a couple of addresses. Making it quicker to get back to somewhere you already have been. This I will find to be quite helpful.

I ended up going to the hidden place and doing a couple more things to further along the quest. I then hit the skill level bottleneck. I was expecting it. I’m just glad I was able to unlock using the rings first. Otherwise, it would have been a while longer before I'd have access to them.

Final Thoughts

Now I just got to break my old habits of running or using the boat to get around everywhere. Sure, the boat will still get me closer in many instances to where I want to go. More times than not the fairy ring system will not get me right next to where I need to go. Instead, it will save me a lot of time running around.

I have a feeling it’s going to be a little while before I get into the new habit of using the fairy rings to get around. I also need to learn the more common ones I'll end up using daily, so I don’t have to go and look them up.

At the very least I'm super excited to have this now done. If only I had known, I could have finished this sooner I would have. It would have saved me quite a bit of time and even the cost of getting around the map. At least I did not wait longer before working towards this goal.
