Windrose Review

World of Xeen would end up having a bit of a surprise for me. There are always these tall tale signs in a Might and Magic game that you are getting rather close to the end of it. Two of them were about to come up rather quickly.
I had put off long enough for entering into the Great Pyramid. It always makes me a little sad after playing a great game when you just get that feeling at any moment things are coming to a close. Thankfully I would be somewhat right and wrong at the same time about that.
This place had some massive floors and tiny little ones. It was almost like the sizes reflected going up in a pyramid. Where once you got to the top there would be little room left.
The first floor ended up having a bunch of switches. Once one set was flicked it would unlock another set of things to do. There would be this strange number puzzle as well.

This area was also filled with things like dragons. I had no idea I'd be running into quite a few dungeons in the future that had loads of these in it. These were not something I could kill fully finish off at range either. As the ranged weapons I had sadly been starting to fall behind the rest of my gear being upgraded. I just never found better after a certain point in the game.
It’s these puzzles where stopping to read hints and even a set of instructions ends up coming quite in handy. More times than not puzzles are not that hard to solve. If however, you miss out on something important reading something about a prime number and needing to answer it won’t work out well.
I also ended up looting some obsidian items out from the first floor. One was even a decent weapon upgrade for one of my melee. I could tell now that his base weapon was dealing double damage just the impact on him hitting a dragon alone in the upcoming fights was having.

The next floor was a bit of a strange one. Mostly an empty place. If one had played this game before I get the feeling this would be a skip over floor. As the next stairs up just required a number. You got that number by running around uncovering on the map a set of numbers and then subtracting numbers from it.
It always amazes me just how many times the answer to a puzzle is slowly uncovered on the map. Even when it’s not the full answer sometimes a massive hint can be looking right back at you all you need to understand is this is something they did in quite a few Might and Magic games. Something these days you rarely see anymore.
There is also another simple rule when it comes to Might and Magic games. These developers are massive Star Trek fans. Even if I did not go around uncovering the map. Once I got to the password being asked and saw the words “Starfleet” number. I can only assume many could have just guessed the password up to the next floor.

The third floor ended up just being filled with hidden teleports. If you hit one it sent you backwards. Since the spot the teleport was in never uncovered the title when you stepped forward. These were easy to see upcoming once I hit one.
This just ended up slowing me down a little bit. Once I knew the location, I could use the spell jump to bypass the teleport trap. I even attempted to use my teleport spell to see if I could just move between the walls and save myself a lot of time in getting to the middle. It was not permitted. No shock there.
The last room was quite small. It also had someone important called the Dragon Pharaoh. He was one of the protectors of the planet. From here I'd be given a quest to carry out many times over.

I also felt like I'd need to return to him again at some point. I decided to move one of my two Lloyd’s Beacons to the fourth floor of the Pyramid. This ended up being quite a smart move and quite the time saver.
I had also now just carried out quite a long-term quest I had been on. I needed to bring an orb to this dragon. For the longest time, I was not sure if this was a good thing to do or some kind of trick. I have at least 5 million experiences from it. Not like I could afford the training at this point. How little did I know at the time just the number of insane levels I'd be getting in such a short amount of time?
This is also part of the game where they lay on some rather thick lore. Long story short there were some crashed spaceships. The lava was removed from around one of them so I could go explore it.

This is also another sign when things start getting so strange in a Might and Magic game you are expecting some kind of ending sooner than later. In a short amount of time, I found myself on a spaceship. The escape pod 2.
The rather cool thing about this part. Two escape pods were sent out in Might and Magic III. While you did not need to play that one. It just shows how some of them were connected through lore and story.
Onboard I found a working computer that had logs of the fight between Shaleon and Corak. Along with everything Shaleon was up to in Might and Magic III, IV, and currently, in V. Since he is the main bad guy, it was nice for them to give a lot of back lore and some insight that he was now doing things at Castle Alamar.
After a while, I realized there was not anything left to do. While I ended up returning to the dragon. He made it clear I was not done yet. I also knew from the lore and some other hints up to this point that there was a second pod that would have Corak on it. It ended up not being that far away.

While on board pod 1 I had to solve a puzzle to get access to Corak. This was one of those puzzles where if you know certain things about Star Trek you can guess without having to spend the time to work out a solution. I was not shocked I already knew the answer without having to think about it.
There was then quite a long chat with Corak. He gave some further backstory and filled in quite a lot of space of what had been going on in the backgrounds while I'd been on my grand adventure.
It was quite clear that Shaleon knew Corak was trapped in this pod. That the moment Corak left it he would become aware. So, I needed to move Corak in a way to trick Shaleon. For that, I was not going to find the answer while still onboard the pod.
I ended up going back to the dragon yet again. This time he was a bit more helpful. He told me I needed to recover a device called the soulbox that Corak could be kept hidden away in.

He also gave me access to a town I had not come across in my adventures so far called Olympus. As one might be able to guess from the name it was a town in the clouds.
Despite how small this place was. It ended up having quite a few town services like a blacksmith, trainer, and other stuff as well. There was even a very tiny dungeon. Once I navigated through, I was able to acquire the soulbox.

I would shortly be returning to Corak to put him into the soulbox. Since I felt this was perhaps getting close to the end. I did not want things to end so quickly. I ended up doing quite a lot of exploring around the map. Still, find lots of random fights to get into trouble with.
I even considered seeing if I had access to a few dungeons that I've found. I was kind of shocked that I still lacked the proper key to enter a few more places. How little I knew at the time that things were just starting to get interesting.
This is also perhaps where having game knowledge of prior games comes to bite my expectations of this one in the behind just a bit. At least it was in a good way. I’ve been having so much of a blast so far playing World Of Xeen and the Might and Magic IV and V that it covers.
