Old School RuneScape | Fishing And Tempoross
I had no idea fishing could be so involved. I decided to level it up some and dive a bit deeper into many of the activities I could do with the skill itself. While I would not be reaching my goal of farming sharks today. I had quite a lot of fun.
The Old Fishing Spot
For a while now I've considered this to be my old fishing spot. I’ve always loved this area as when I was free to play, catching lobsters and cooking them was my main money maker. Now as a member, this spot only got better.
The nice thing about this spot is not that far away from where I fish is a campfire. While it used to be a little bit of a run to the bank from where I cook the lobster. You might notice that odd tree right next to the campfire.
That is a spirit tree. Now I can teleport right next to the grand exchange. Making it only a couple steps walk to either the bank or to list items for sale if needed.
Moreover, with my graceful set, I no longer need to stop and walk from the fishing spot, campfire, or going to the bank. I get to run the entire way there and back. Making this quite a sweet spot.
It would also just so happen to be that I'm out of lobsters for healing with. So, I needed to stockpile a bunch anyway. On top of that, I'm in quite the need for cooking experience. I ended up getting some fishing and cooking levels while restocking a resource I needed.
I find this spot so convenient I don’t want to leave it. Sure, I could go elsewhere and start harpoon fishing for a better experience. Any spot I've looked at is either quite far away from a bank or a permanent campfire or both.
Quest: Sea Slug
While there are not that many fishing quests compared to others. There are a couple. In the past, I already did the easy one which was a fishing contest. This one ended up being easy as well and far more rewarding in terms of experience than I was expecting.
I was expecting it to be more fishing involved than it was. I just had to pay my way for a boat to take me out to a fishing platform. From there I found a kid that was hiding from the fisherman onboard the platform. It seems his father went missing. The fisherman also wanted to dump them both into the sea and off the platform.
His father ended up stranded on an island. It seems he was not as good at hiding as his kid was.
Since I did not find his father on the platform, I ended up getting a boat out to the nearby island. His father was there. I was also attacked by a sea slug! Afterward, I ended up helping the kid escape the fishing platform so he could join his father.
For my short amount of trouble, I ended up gaining over 7k in fishing experience. Along with being given access to the fishing platform. If only all quests were this easy, I'd be done with them all by now. Then again, it would not be quite as exciting to do that many quests that were like this. The next fishing quest would be a bit more involved.
Quest: Tai Bwo Wannai Tho
The local chief was not happy to see me in his hunt. He, however, had an issue that needed to be solved. He wanted me to go around to his three sons and help them out. While one was a proud warrior struggling in a hunt another seemed like quite a fat lazy slob. Then you had the middle child. No longer were they not getting along so great.
For one of them, I ended up making him a special spear to help him in his lion hunt. I first had to watch him fail in the hunt. I then gave him a helping hand in the weapons department and that was all that was needed for him to have a successful hunt.
The next one just needed help fishing. So, I ended up catching some fish he could use as bait. Out of all of them, this one seemed to be the most reasonable.
The last one I could not stand. He was supposed to be repairing a statue. He kept asking for silly things as if I was here to be his servant. Of all the things I needed to bring him one was a sandwich. This included a monkey for meat and seaweed for the bread.
Once everything was done, I ended up getting 5k fishing and cooking experience. I’m starting to like getting experience for both of those skills at once. I’m kind of shocked I did not get further experience. It did, however, give some attack and strength experience as well. Not enough to level up any of these skills but it’s better than nothing.
Mini Boss: Tempoross
Tempoross can be entered from the Ruins of Unkah. Unlike other fights this one you can’t take damage in. It’s also a bit like Wintertodt where standard weapons are not used. Instead, you are using a harpoon to catch fish among other activities to gain points and deal damage.
While it’s possible to solo Tempoross I just have the entry-level harpoon. So, I decided to world-hop to 422 as it is one of the worlds designated for running Tempoross. This place was so loaded with people that I got a reminder I could switch to another world with fewer people in it.
It was then time to board the boat. It seems the boat would take off every so often. I even missed it once and found myself thirty seconds later catching another one that had fewer people on it. Which I did enjoy a bit more in learning the ropes. In total, I ran it about four times to test the waters.
Once we got there, I quickly searched some chests on the ship to see what items I could acquire. There was a bin for rope, buckets, and a harpoon which I'd be needing. I’d later discover you could fill up the buckets with water on the docks at a tap down below.
You are given a couple of seconds to set up. After my first run, I learned it was best to fill up any bucket if I did not on my way out after the event finished. I then stood on the island below waiting till I could start harpooning for fish.
Occasionally, there is a fishing hole that has a fish jumping out of the water. This would grant you a chance at collecting double the number of fish you harpoon. Many seemed to base their strategy on maximizing time fishing at those spots only.
Since the double chance fishing holes were not always up. I ended up catching a dozen or so fish first. Then I decided to start working on cooking them. I hoped that a new double chance spot would spawn so I could stop cooking fish and finish filling up my inventory.
Occasionally, a colossal wave would hit the island and boat. You then had to make a mad dash to a spot where you could secure yourself with a rope. Otherwise, quite a few fish in your inventory would get washed away.
This was not the only way to lose fish either. Occasionally storm clouds would show up and start fires on the ground. If you put them out with buckets of water, you scored some extra points. If you got caught in one it would start burning the fish, making you lose them.
While you did not need to cook the fish. They gave you more points. Since I was often switching between cooking and fishing at double chance spots. I found it to be better points-wise to be doing it this way. If I wanted to focus more on getting fishing experience I'd just use them uncooked.
Once I had a full inventory it was time to board the ship and start firing the cooked fish I had acquired. The harpoon fish would cause damage to Tempoross’s energy. Once that hit zero it was time to deal damage to his essence. Till then I'd just keep collecting fish and repeating the above process.
Once his energy was down acting like a shield, he could take damage to his essence which acted like health. You could go down on the dock and start harpooning a Sprit pool to deal damage.
I always do my best to time it so I can be at the dock to deal with damage during the essence phase. It seems to grant quite a decent number of points. You need a minimum of 2k points just to get loot. After that every 700 points gets you even further loot.
While his essence is being damaged his energy starts to regenerate over time. Once that gets back up to 100%, he stops taking essence damage and everyone switches back to farming and shooting fish.
There also seems there be an unwritten rule that if the group is so large that you are about to kill Tempoross in the first round everyone stops harpooning the Sprit pool around 5%. This allows the fight to go to the second round so everyone can at least farm some points and get the minimum 2k points needed.
After taking out Tempoross a couple of times I went to go collect my loot. That required a small fishing net and going to the reward pool outside of the boat you board to get into the fight.
I did not loot anything special. I maybe got 30k gold worth of fish and some other loot. There is quite a small chance to loot things like a tackle box, dragon harpoon, and even a tiny tempor pet. Some items are tradeable, and some are not.
Final Thoughts
I had a lot more fun with Tempoross than I did with Wintertodt. Granted I did luck out and make more running Wintertodt. Still, Tempoross seems like a fun way to get some fishing levels, so I'll be keeping at it. Who knows, maybe I'll end up looting something nice out of it.
There is also a fishing outfit for me to get that grants a small increase in fishing experience. It can be upgraded to include a rope to use during Tempoross. The only reason I did not work on that is it requires some levels in the hunting skill which I rather lack. Yet another thing to work on one day.
