Old School RuneScape | AFKing And Questing For Combat Experience

AFKing And Questing Combat Experience.jpg

It seems my combat level is still quite lacking in some things I can achieve in the short term. As such it was time to do some AFK farming and go out to do some questing to raise those levels for my melee combat skills. While it would not be enough it’s at least a good start.

AFKing Sand Crabs

Before going out and doing a bunch of quests. It was time to grind combat the lazy way. I headed out to where there were lots of sand crabs. They have sixty health and do almost no damage to me whatsoever.

Even better I can AFK for a short while and not worry about having to heal. All I had to do was toggle auto retaliation. I had a spot where two sand crabs would spawn and attack me. Once they were defeated, they would keep respawning and attacking me for a little while.

They would, however, after a while stop attacking me all together. Once that happened, I had to run far enough away that I could no longer see them. Then I'd run a few more tiles just to be safe. Then I'd run back to the sand crabs, and they would start attacking me again.

I started with around level 47 attack and 48 strength. I ended up leaving the sand crabs around level 54 attack and 51 strength. The plan was not to be here for a crazy long amount of time. I just needed a couple more loves in both skills to make doing other activities slightly easier.

Quest The Grand Tree

The grand tree.jpg

One of the more annoying things when using The Grand Tree location spirit tree to get to it is I could not use it to leave. As it requires a quest to be finished to do so. That quest also just happens to reward some experience I'm after. So, I thought why not save myself sometime in the future and finish off a quest that I was going to do at some point anyway.

Despite all the times I've teleported to the area of The Grand Tree since I had a farming plot over there. I had yet to go inside of the tree itself. It turns out it has quite a massive city on one of its floors with a bank and everything. Even better I started this quest at the end of one of my tree-farming runs. So, I was in the area anyway.

I had to solve some issues for King Narnode. He needed me to run off to someone with some items to have them translated. They think there is something wrong with the tree. It was one of those maybe they are not watering it enough. Maybe it was this or that, but no one had any real idea what.

They also thought maybe an invasion of some sort was going to happen. They even ended up locking me out of The Grand Tree area as not to risk anyone who could have been an invader or the spy from getting inside. Making things a bit more difficult.

Thankfully not everyone believed there was an invasion about to happen. One of the gnomes ended up smuggling me back inside so I could deliver news they had been quite wrong about many things.

In the end, I found the real issue they were having. The was a black demon down in the base of the tree. This was causing the tree some issues. This is also why I wanted to have a few more combat levels. As this thing had 157 health and was level 172! One of the higher-level things I've had to fight to date.

This quest ended up netting me over 18k attack experience along with some agility and magic experience as well. It was also quite a time-consuming quest, so it gave five quest points as well. Which would help put me closer to the amount I needed for some other quests at some point.

It also gave me access to the gnome glider network. While I could end up using it a couple of times. I had many other ways of getting around at this point that I would end up using instead. At least it was another means of transportation if I was in the right area and needed to go somewhere it would take me.

Quest: Scorpion Catcher

a wizard.jpg

I had been meaning to do this quest a lot sooner than I had been able to. It had this one requirement that I've been lacking for quite some time that took far too long to level up. I needed level 31 prayer. As soon as I hit the level, I was off to this quest to start it.

A wizard that lives in a tower as one should expect one to live in. He lost his pet scorpions. I was tasked with going around and rounding them up. As if this was some kind of normal thing to do for an adventure. I’m sure the people who had these things wander in on them were quite scared. I can only hope they were not lost for too long.

Some of them were in intresting and hard to get to places. It would end up taking me longer to get to the locations they were at in many instances than it took to capture them. I was at least glad I did not have to fight them.

While this quest did not reward a lot. I was just happy to get 6k strength experience and another quest point. It at least did not feel like it went on forever like some other quests I've been working on.

In Search Of The Myreque

While this quest only rewarded a small amount of experience. It rewarded experience in five different skills. It also unlocked some areas I had no idea about called the Hollows. While I don’t see myself going there much other than in the quest it is another underground cave I got to be in.

I think it’s fair to say I found this quest annoying. I needed to bring along a herb pouch with five changes in it. The only issue is ghosts in the area you had to cross where you also refill it with charges and consume those charges when they attack instead of spoiling your food.

I ended up refilling the pouch so many times I ran out of prayer points to be able to cast bloom with the silver scythe I had acquired from another quest. This meant I teleported out and went to a prayer alter to gain more prayer before attempting this again.

In the end, I discovered there was a fairy ring I could have just taken that put me on the other side of the swamp I had passed through. So, on a fresh attempt with 31 prayer points, I refilled the druid pouch and then left the swamp. Took the fairy ring to the other side and was able to move forward on this quest. What ended up being the challenging part of this quest ended up being one of the shorter things I had to do.

fighting a hellhound.jpg

This quest also requires quite a few items. I needed them to make some repairs and to arm some people. Those people would end up getting instantly killed. Thankfully I only had to fend off a Hellhound as at the time I had zero food remaining. Since the three lobsters I even had room for ended up getting rotted while I was attempting to cross the swamp anyway.

Getting those combat levels I got at the start and from other quests paid off big time during this one. I ended up defeating the Hellhound with half my health remaining. Then I just had a short walk over to the quest NPC to finish this thing off. I can only hope I'm done having to go into the swamp for quite some time. I can’t stand that place!

Final Thoughts

another one done.jpg

It was great to finish off a few more quests and get some combat levels raised. There also seem to be quite a few quests that reward some sort of experience for either attack, strength, or even defense. Not to mention range and magic as well. Which I also need to spend some time leveling up at some point.
