Might And Magic VI I | Barrow Downs And The Dwarfs
I was not expecting a dungeon in an easy part of the world to have some massive yields of treasure. Yet there it was all for my taking. Between exploring the Tularean Forest and picking up a bunch of bow upgrades to the insanity I looted in Clanker’s Lab. Things were about to get rather exciting.
After having enough of Barrow Downs for the time being. I decided to head in the other direction and hope to find something a bit more on my level. First, I made a stop in Harmondale to check in on my castle and buy quite a few spells with my newfound wealth. I must have spent a good 16k gold in no time flat.
I decided to open up my quest log and see if there were any hints of somewhere else, I should be going instead. This gave me an excuse to head north and into the Tularean Forest. This place would end up being quite easy.
My biggest struggle with Tularean Forest is a large chunk of the area is across the sea as some islands. I’d need either water walking skills or flying. I had not even trained any of my casters to use water spells let alone to the expert level to use water walking.
The only creatures I'd run into were when walking through the forests. There would be these giant ugly ugly-looking trees. While they were rooted in place and did not move. They often spawned in clusters and used ranged attacks.
As it would turn out hunting these trees would end up being quite worth my time. Not only did some of them drop gemstones that alone sold for a nice little chunk of gold. They were also guarding something all around them.
There were these Elven Longbows placed on the ground in the middle of each of the clusters of trees I found. In total, I ended up looting three of said bows. These bows had +4 damage on them which was quite a massive upgrade over the ones I had bought.
There also ended up being a town on stilts. I guess they were trying to go for the treehouse kind of vibe. I don’t think it quite worked out. I ended up picking up some upgrades to skills and some other things while there.
I’d later get a few levels and end up leveling up my water skill to level 4. This would allow me to use the waterwalk spell. So I walked to one of the little islands I could see off in the distance.
It ended up having some chests to loot and more trees to kill. I was a little disappointed I did not find a fourth bow or even some better ones. There was also this massive bridge that connected one of the islands to another island.
That is when I found a dungeon. With how easy the rest of the zone had been. I thought why not? This dungeon seems rather unassuming as well. It however would not disappoint. In it, I'd end up looting items I suspect I'll be carrying to the end game.
That dungeon is called Clanker’s Lab. It even had a creature in it that I could not kill for the time being. Thankfully it was not till the last room. A room that was hidden. This dungeon would have a few hidden things in it.
While I was kind of on the fence about wanting to clear it after seeing it had floating eyes, Magog, and some other stuff in it. The kind of stuff that explodes on death causing you damage. I could tell on the mini-map there was a lot going on in such a small area. I just could not help myself.
On the map it looked like going left or right would lead me to the same spot so I ended up going left. That is where I kept getting ambushed by a room that was to the left. So, I decided I'd go back to the start of the zone and go right. That would I thought make it easier to clear out the middle room.
It turns out that it might look like it connects on the mini-map to both sides. That would not end up being the case. There was quite a small basement to this dungeon. It had some barrels for stats down there. Nothing earth-shattering.
It did however reveal that there were not as many creatures as I thought on what now is the upper middle room. I decided to just rush in there and start melee down what I could. Hoping to get some kills before needing to run for the exit and rest outside.
This ended up keeping me away from what kept walking down the hallway to join in the fight. Sure, enough it bought me enough time to clear out the room before making a mad dash for the exit to heal. Two of my characters were out cold.
I then ran back in and cleared up what was wandering down part of the hallways. Some other eyes had retreated to the back of that hallway and left me alone. This let me take a better look at the middle room.
In there, I found a button. Pushing it removed a panel to display two hidden chests. This was some insane loot in there. An amulet with +1 to all stats and resistance. The other chest had a +9 spell points ring in it and a +12 endurance ring.
In the middle room was also what I thought was a well. It however had no water in it. It kind of looked like a hole that led down to the basement area that I was in. I felt that it was so odd to place that there.
I wondered what was the risk if I was just to jump down the hole. If it led to the basement, I already cleared none at all. I jumped and I started to hear the sounds of two doors sliding open.
On each end of the middle room, there were three chests on either side now shown in hidden side rooms. Like all the chests in this place, my thief lacks the skill to pick them without almost killing us. So, I healed up the group and went for the first one.
The first chest I opened alone made my jaw drop several times. The first item I checked was a crossbow with increased weapon speed and +7. Then I rolled my cursor over an item that said it was an artifact two-handed sword. My eyes almost fell out of their sockets.
I right away put the weapon on my knight. The only downside is up till now I was training him to use a shield and a one-handed sword. That weapon is such a beast I'm ok with a couple of skill points that I spent on shield going to waste.
After healing up the group a bit I opened up the next chest. Around 10k in gold. Along with plate armor with +54 armor on it. As if that was not enough there was even a ring that increased all effects of spirit spells for my cleric to use.
At this point, my inventory is already full from all the loot I've been pulling out of chests. I also have enough experience to level up and put some more skill points into disarming traps for chests.
While it was annoying to have to use a water walk to cross the ocean to the mainland and run back to the town of Tularean Forest. It’s what I had to do. I’m rather glad as I needed the sell items anyway.
I then made the long run back over the water again. Now having gained a level. My disarm traps skill was increased by once. Since it’s expert it’s like gaining two levels for that. While I'd still take damage opening chests it was quite a bit less damage now.
I then opened a chest that had not only the 54 armor like the first piece of plate I found. This thing also gave a bonus to all stats. What an insane find for my knight who is getting quite the massive might boost at this point between this armor and the weapon I found him.
By the time I had the remaining six hidden chests looted I had even further upgrades for the rest of the group as well. Not as amazing but still great. Some of these items included a new dagger, a +5 disarm skill ring (that helped reduce the damage opening the chests even further), chain armor, and some rings.
Just getting any one of those items out of a single dungeon I would have been thrilled about. All of this out of six chests. That is mind-blowing. The looting did not stop there either.
There ended up being two rooms that looked like lab laboratories. Filled to the brim with some insane potions that I wish I had could store items in the bank. Some of the potions I found I'd end up taking right away.
From Might and Magic 6 I had come to know about black potions that give permanent stat boots. When I noticed there were some in the first laboratories, I quickly hovered over to see what it said. One of them gave the drinker +50 intellect and another luck.
Needless to say, after seeing some of the insane potions in the two laboratory rooms. I am going to need to sit down and try and learn the crafting potions aspect of Might and Magic 7. I also helped myself to a couple of bottles while I was at it of other stuff from insane healing to damage buffs.
The other chests I'd find in this dungeon were decent loot as well. I’d end up getting a low base damage bow with fire damage that made up for it. Another bow with increased speed. Then some further amulets, rings, and capes. Even a helmet and gauntlets that were upgraded as well.
Every single one of my characters from this dungeon got multiple pieces of upgrades. Some even fill out some empty slots I have like ring slots. Quite a decent damage boost overall for the party. Just all the bows I got from Tularean Forest and Clanker’s Lab are going to make a huge impact.
Clanker’s Lab was however not a dungeon I was able to fully clear. There was some insane evil eye at the end. It was so evil even the other creatures in this place tried to kill it and failed. I attempted a couple of times before calling it a day and this adventure was a massive win.
